How to Find Vintage Clothing

How to Find Vintage Clothing

Love walking down the street on a summer day in your 1950's circle skirt? How about going out on the town in your leather, butterfly-lapel jacket? Want more vintage to round out your wardrobe? Here are some tips on how to find it.

Step
1

You'll want to familiarize yourself with vintage fashions so that you will know them when you see them. Look through old magazines, vintage clothing stores, old photos or even on the Internet for examples of vintage styles. Notice the fabrics that are used, what the labels look like, what kind of closures they have and the various cuts and designs. These will all be clues while you're on the hunt.

Step
2

Sometimes the best things in life are free. Ask Grandma, Mom, Aunt Lucy or your pack-rat friend if you can look through her attic for vintage clothes. They probably forgot they had stuff left over from the last century. You can even offer to clean out the attic in exchange for keeping what you find.

Step
3

Garage sales and flea markets are a good source of inexpensive vintage. Often people don't know the value of what they are trying to get rid of and will sell you that smoking robe from the '40's for a steal.

Step
4

Of course, thrift stores have a plethora of vintage if you don't mind taking the time to search through lots of duds to find the good stuff; it's in there. Go on half-price days to get the best deals.

Step
5

Your most expensive option--but also the easiest--is vintage clothing stores (usually found in big cities and college towns) and the Internet. There are plenty of sites just for vintage clothing, but these are usually the mostly costly because they specialize. EBay is a good value, especially since you can do a search and quickly find exactly what you are looking for. Be sure to try different descriptive words in different searches for best results.

Tips & Warnings

If buying vintage online, always check the measurements, as vintage sizes are different from modern ones.

Beware of reproduction vintage clothing, which are newer clothes made to look like vintage, often for costume purposes.
